Careful Siding Removal and Cleanup

We strip old siding safely, protect your property, and leave you with a clean, inspected wall ready for what comes next.

Siding Removal by RemodelPro

Removing old siding sounds simple, but it's where many of the important decisions on a siding project get made. Tear-off reveals the condition of the sheathing, the weather barrier and the framing, and it's the only way to know for sure what you're building on.

Older homes are often wrapped in more than one layer: original wood clapboard under aluminum, or vinyl over a previous layer of something else. Each layer adds weight, hides problems, and makes it harder to flash windows and doors correctly. We remove everything down to a sound substrate.

Some older siding and the paint on it may contain materials that require special handling. If we suspect that, we'll explain your options before any work begins and make sure removal is handled in line with local requirements.

How we handle siding removal

Landscape protection

Tarps and plywood guards protect plants, beds, walkways and air conditioning units from falling debris.

Multi-layer tear-off

We remove every layer of old siding, furring and failed wrap so new siding goes onto a flat, sound wall.

Documented inspection

We photograph what we find under the siding and walk you through any repairs that are needed.

Older material awareness

We watch for materials that may require special testing and handling, and pause to discuss them with you.

Hauling and disposal

All removed material is loaded and hauled away; nothing is left on your lawn.

Nail sweeps

Magnetic sweepers go over the yard and driveway daily to pick up stray nails and fasteners.

What we look for once the siding is off

With the wall exposed, we check the things that determine how long your new siding will perform.

  • Soft, delaminated or rotted sheathing, especially below windows and at wall bottoms
  • Missing or torn weather barrier
  • Missing flashing at windows, doors, decks and roof-to-wall intersections
  • Insect or rodent activity in the wall cavity
  • Gaps around pipes, vents and wires that leak air

Removal on its own

Most removal is part of a full siding replacement, but we can also remove siding for homeowners planning an addition, a masonry veneer, or another exterior finish. Let us know your plans and we'll leave the wall prepared for the next trade.

Siding Removal

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my house exposed to weather during removal?
Only briefly. We remove siding in sections and cover exposed walls with new weather barrier the same day, so your home is never left open overnight.
How noisy and messy is siding removal?
There's prying, hammering and some dust for a day or two. We protect your landscaping and clean up daily, and most homeowners find it far less disruptive than they expected.
What if you find rot?
We'll stop, show you photos, explain the repair and get your approval before replacing damaged sheathing or framing. Our proposals explain how this is handled ahead of time.
Can siding be removed and reused?
Rarely. Most siding is damaged during removal, and reinstalling old material over a new weather barrier gives you a new wall with an old face. It's usually best to install new siding.
Do I need to move things away from the house?
Please move vehicles, grills, patio furniture, planters and wall decorations at least several feet from the exterior before work begins.
