Gutter Options Compared

Standard seamless aluminum, covered gutters, copper or half-round? Here's how the main options compare for your home.

The right gutter system depends on your roof, your trees, your home's style and how much maintenance you want to do. This side-by-side comparison highlights the key differences. Cost ranges are relative, from $ (most affordable) to $$$$ (premium).

Standard seamless aluminum: the reliable default

Seamless aluminum K-style gutters are the most popular choice for good reason. They're formed on site to fit your home exactly, come in many colors, resist rust and carry a lot of water for their size. For most homes, a properly sized and pitched seamless aluminum system is all you need.

The main trade-off is maintenance: without a cover, they need cleaning at least twice a year, and more often under heavy tree cover.

Covered gutters: less time on the ladder

Covered gutter systems pair a seamless gutter with a cover that lets water in while keeping leaves and debris out. They're a great fit if you have mature trees, a multi-story home where ladder work is risky, or you simply don't want to clean gutters anymore.

They cost more up front but can pay for themselves through avoided cleanings and fewer overflow problems. Fine debris like pine needles may still need occasional attention.

Copper and half-round: style that lasts

Copper gutters are a premium choice that can last for generations. They start bright and gradually develop a brown, then green patina, adding character to brick, stone and historic homes. Soldered seams and copper hangers make them a true craftsman installation.

Half-round gutters have a traditional rounded profile that suits Colonial, Tudor and Victorian architecture. They're available in aluminum for a classic look on a moderate budget, or in copper for the ultimate in elegance. Because their shape holds slightly less water than the same width K-style, we may recommend a larger size.
