Composite Decks: More Relaxing, Less Maintaining

Rich wood-look colors, splinter-free surfaces and no yearly staining. Spend your weekends enjoying your deck, not working on it.

Composite Decks by RemodelPro

Composite decking blends wood fibers and plastics, and many modern boards add a tough protective shell, or cap, that resists stains, scratches and fading. The result is a deck surface that looks like wood but doesn't need sanding, staining or sealing year after year.

Composite boards come in a wide range of colors, from light driftwood grays to deep browns and rich reds, with realistic grain patterns. You can mix colors for borders and inlays to create a custom look without the upkeep of a fine-wood deck.

Composite is typically installed over a pressure-treated or steel frame. Since the boards last so long, we make sure the framing beneath is built to match, with proper spacing, joist protection and hidden fastener options.

Benefits of composite decking

No staining or sealing

Just occasional washing keeps composite looking good.

Splinter free

Comfortable for bare feet, kids and pets.

Fade and stain resistant

Capped boards resist sun fading, spills and food stains.

Won't rot or attract insects

Composite doesn't decay or provide food for wood-boring pests.

Design flexibility

Multiple colors, picture-frame borders and inlays for a custom look.

Hidden fasteners

Clip systems create a clean surface free of visible screws.

Things to know about composite

Composite is low maintenance, not no maintenance. It should be cleaned a couple of times a year to prevent mold and pollen buildup, and spills like grease are easier to remove when cleaned promptly.

  • Darker colors absorb more heat in direct sun; lighter shades stay cooler
  • Composite expands and contracts with temperature, so proper gapping matters
  • Joist spacing must match the board manufacturer's requirements, especially for diagonal patterns
  • Use cleaners approved by the manufacturer to protect the board surface

Frequently Asked Questions

Does composite decking get hot?
All decking warms in direct sun, and darker composites can get noticeably hot. Lighter colors, shade structures and some heat-mitigating board lines help keep the surface comfortable.
How long does composite decking last?
Quality capped composite boards are designed to last for decades with basic care. Manufacturer warranties on fading and staining are often lengthy; we'll review them with you.
Is composite slippery?
Most composite boards have textured surfaces that provide good traction. As with any deck, wet leaves, ice and algae can make surfaces slick, so regular cleaning helps.
Can composite go over my old deck frame?
Only if the frame is sound and joist spacing meets the composite manufacturer's requirements. Many older frames need reinforcing or replacing.
Can I grill on a composite deck?
Yes, with care. Use a grill mat to catch grease and embers, and keep the grill away from railings and siding.
