Gutter Frequently Asked Questions

What homeowners want to know about gutter installation, covers, cleaning and keeping water away from their foundation.

Gutters are easy to overlook until something goes wrong. These answers cover what homeowners most often ask us about choosing, installing and maintaining gutters. Call (555) 123-4567 for a free estimate.

Gutter Basics

Why are gutters important?
Gutters collect rainwater from your roof and direct it away from the house. Without them, water pours off the roof edge, rotting fascia, staining siding, eroding landscaping and soaking the soil around your foundation, which can lead to damp basements and foundation problems.
What are seamless gutters?
Seamless gutters are formed on site from a continuous coil of metal, cut to the exact length of each run. With seams only at corners and downspout outlets, there are far fewer places for leaks to develop compared to sectional gutters joined every few feet.
What size gutters do I need?
Most homes use 5-inch K-style gutters, but homes with large or steep roof areas, or in regions with heavy rainfall, often benefit from 6-inch gutters and larger downspouts. We calculate the drainage area of each roof section to recommend the right size.
How many downspouts should my home have?
It depends on roof area, gutter size and run length. As a general guideline, long runs need downspouts at both ends or a downspout every 30 to 40 feet. Adding downspouts or using larger ones is one of the most effective fixes for overflowing gutters.

Gutter Covers

Do gutter covers really work?
Quality covers greatly reduce clogs from leaves and larger debris, which means less cleaning and fewer overflows. No system is entirely maintenance-free; fine debris like pine needles and seeds may still need occasional attention, but cleanings are far less frequent.
Can covers be added to my existing gutters?
Often, yes, if your gutters are in good condition, properly sized and correctly pitched. If they're sagging, leaking or undersized, it's usually better to install new gutters with covers as a complete system.
Will gutter covers cause ice dams?
Gutter covers don't cause ice dams; ice dams are caused by heat escaping into the attic and melting snow on the roof. Good attic insulation and ventilation are the real fix. Some cover designs shed snow better than others, and we can recommend options suited to cold climates.

Maintenance

How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least twice a year, in late spring and late fall, for most homes. If you have overhanging trees, especially pines, you may need to clean more often. Our seasonal gutter maintenance checklist covers what to look for throughout the year.
Why are my gutters overflowing even though they're clean?
Overflowing clean gutters usually point to incorrect slope, undersized gutters, too few downspouts, or a hidden clog in a downspout elbow. It can also happen when roof valleys concentrate water onto one short section of gutter.
What causes gutters to pull away from the house?
Common causes include loose or failed hangers, the weight of debris, water or ice, and rotted fascia boards that can no longer hold fasteners. The fascia should be repaired before the gutter is reattached so the fix lasts.

Replacement and Installation

How long do gutters last?
Seamless aluminum gutters commonly last 20 years or more with proper care, while copper can last for many decades. Lifespan depends on climate, maintenance and how well the system was installed.
How long does gutter installation take?
Most homes are completed in a single day. Larger homes, complex rooflines or projects that include fascia repair or gutter covers may take a little longer.
Should I replace gutters when I replace my roof?
It's often a smart time to do it. The drip edge and gutters work together, and coordinating the two lets us ensure water flows correctly from the roof into the gutter. If your gutters are in good shape, we can carefully remove and reinstall them.
What color options are available?
Seamless aluminum gutters come in a wide range of factory-finished colors to match or contrast with your trim, siding and roof. Copper develops a natural patina over time and is typically left unpainted.
