Siding Frequently Asked Questions

Everything homeowners ask us about choosing, installing and caring for siding, answered in plain English.

New siding changes both how your home looks and how well it's protected. Here are answers to the questions we hear most. For anything specific to your home, schedule a free, no-obligation estimate.

When to Replace

How do I know if my siding needs replacing?
Look for warping, buckling, cracks, loose or missing pieces, soft or rotting boards, and paint that peels soon after it's applied. Moisture stains or mold on interior walls and rising energy bills can also point to failing siding. Isolated damage can often be repaired, but widespread problems usually call for replacement.
Can damaged siding be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes, especially if the damage is limited to a few boards from a storm or impact. The main challenge is matching color and profile on older or discontinued products. We'll tell you honestly whether a repair will blend in or whether a larger section makes more sense.
Can new siding go over my old siding?
Sometimes it's possible, but we usually recommend removing it. Tear-off lets us inspect and repair the sheathing, install a proper weather-resistant barrier and flashing, and avoid trapping moisture or rot. It also produces a flatter, cleaner finished wall.

Choosing a Material

What is the best siding material?
There's no single best choice. Vinyl is affordable and low maintenance, fiber cement is very durable and fire-resistant, engineered wood offers a natural look with good impact resistance, and cedar delivers unmatched authentic beauty with more upkeep. Our siding comparison page lays out the trade-offs side by side.
What is insulated vinyl siding?
It's vinyl siding with a rigid foam backing contoured to each panel. The foam adds insulation, makes the panels stiffer and straighter on the wall, and improves impact resistance. It's a good upgrade if comfort and energy efficiency are priorities.
Will vinyl siding fade or melt?
Modern quality vinyl is formulated to resist fading, though all exterior colors change slightly over many years. Distortion is rare and is usually caused by concentrated reflected sunlight from certain energy-efficient windows nearby or by grills placed too close. Many lines offer dark colors engineered to resist heat.
How do I choose a siding color?
Start with the colors you aren't changing, like the roof and any brick or stone, and pick siding with a matching warm or cool undertone. Look at large samples outdoors at different times of day. Our blog post on choosing siding colors has more tips.

Installation

How long does siding installation take?
Most homes take one to two weeks depending on size, the number of windows and corners, the material and the weather. Fiber cement and cedar typically take longer than vinyl because of cutting and finishing requirements.
What is house wrap and do I need it?
House wrap is a weather-resistant barrier installed over the sheathing before siding goes on. It sheds any water that gets behind the siding while letting water vapor escape from the wall. Siding is a rain screen, not a waterproof shell, so a properly lapped and taped barrier is essential.
Should I replace windows before siding?
If your windows are near the end of their life, yes. Installing windows first allows them to be properly flashed and integrated with the new weather barrier and trim. Replacing windows after new siding is installed often means disturbing the siding around each opening.
Will you replace trim, soffits and fascia too?
We recommend evaluating them at the same time. Rotted trim or fascia should be repaired or replaced before new siding goes on, and coordinating new trim and soffits gives the whole exterior a finished, uniform look.

Maintenance and Value

How do I clean my siding?
For most siding, a soft brush or cloth, a garden hose and a mild soap solution once or twice a year is enough. Avoid high-pressure washing, which can force water behind panels and damage finishes. Check your manufacturer's care guidelines for any specific cleaners to avoid.
Does new siding improve energy efficiency?
Siding itself adds limited insulation, but a replacement project is the perfect time to improve the whole wall. Insulated siding, a new weather barrier and sealing gaps around windows and penetrations can noticeably reduce drafts and improve comfort.
Is new siding a good investment?
Siding replacement is one of the most visible improvements you can make, boosting curb appeal while protecting the structure from moisture. It can make a home more appealing to buyers and reduce ongoing maintenance. We offer financing for qualified homeowners to make the project more manageable.
