Natural Slate: A Roof for Generations

Quarried stone with a timeless look and a lifespan measured in decades upon decades. We install and repair slate with the care it deserves.

Slate Roofing by RemodelPro

Natural slate is split from quarried stone, and a well-built slate roof can protect a home for 75 to 150 years or more. Many historic churches, estates and older homes still wear their original slate today.

Slate comes in a range of natural colors including gray, black, green, purple and red, and in a variety of thicknesses and textures. Some slates hold their color for life; others, called weathering slates, gradually shift in tone over time.

Slate is heavy and unforgiving of shortcuts. The roof structure must be able to carry its weight, and every slate needs to be fastened with corrosion-resistant nails and hung, not driven tight. Flashing should last as long as the stone, which is why we typically use copper or other long-life metals on slate roofs.

Why slate stands apart

Exceptional lifespan

Good slate can outlast several generations of owners with proper care.

Fireproof

Stone does not burn, giving slate the highest fire resistance.

Timeless character

Slate adds distinction and authenticity, especially on historic and traditional homes.

Very low absorption

Quality slate absorbs almost no water, so it resists freeze-thaw damage.

Natural color range

Stone colors and textures vary naturally for a roof no factory can duplicate.

Repairable

Individual broken slates can be replaced without disturbing the surrounding roof.

Don't replace a slate roof too soon

Many slate roofs are torn off while the stone still has decades of life left. Often the real problem is failed flashing, rusted nails or a handful of broken slates, all of which can be repaired. Before you replace a slate roof, have it evaluated by someone who works with slate. We will tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes sense.

One important tip: avoid letting anyone walk on a slate roof who does not know how. Slate can crack under careless foot traffic, and we use roof ladders, hooks and planks to work safely without damaging it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a slate roof last?
Depending on the quarry and quality of the stone, natural slate can last roughly 75 to 150 years or more. The flashing and fasteners often wear out before the stone, which is why long-life metals are used.
Can my house support a slate roof?
Slate is much heavier than asphalt shingles, so the roof framing needs to be evaluated before switching. Some homes need reinforcement; others are already built to carry it.
Can individual slates be replaced?
Yes. A broken slate is removed and a matching one is installed using a slate hook or similar method. This targeted repair is one of slate's biggest advantages.
Is slate more expensive than other roofing?
Natural slate is among the most expensive roofing materials to buy and install. Its extraordinary lifespan means the cost per year can be reasonable for owners planning to stay long term.
Can you match my existing slate?
We work to find stone that matches the color, size and thickness of your existing slate, including salvaged slate when needed. Some older or rare slates are difficult to match exactly, and we will let you know if that is the case.
